Commemorating the Knox Church Fire of 1913 Exhibit
We will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Knox Church Fire with a special display in our current Fire Fighting exhibit. One hundred years ago a devastating fire destroyed Knox Presbyterian Church in downtown Stratford. Three heroic men - Fire Chief Hugh Durkin, Police Chief John McCarthy and Constable Matthew Hamilton - lost their lives fighting that fire. In the early hours of May 13, 1913, the steeple of Knox Presbyterian Church was hit by lightning causing a fire. The exhibit includes striking images of the fire and its aftermath, as well as important rare artifacts - scared timber from the church and clothing remnants belonging to Fire Chief Hugh Durkin - loaned from the Stratford Perth Archives. Photo courtesy of the Stratford Perth Archives.
