Bisland & Bly by The Sycamore Theatre Company - SpringWorks: indie theatre& arts festival

Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland raced each other in opposite directions around the world in 1889-1890 -- a time when it was not only exceptional for women to travel without chaperones but in which it was unheard of for anyone, regardless of gender, to traverse the globe in almost any amount of time, let alone under eighty days. Bisland and Bly defied convention and conquered previously uncharted territory, not only as travelers but as reporters: for they were successful journalists in their own right, already playing a man’s game and winning in a time when women predominantly stayed at home.

Their race captured the attention of the world, and when Nellie Bly won, she came home a conquering American hero.  Yet, unlike most American heroes, there is very little mention of Bly and virtually none of Bisland in the history books. Bisland & Bly is a musical about two remarkable women who were as different as can be, yet found themselves engaged in a race that ignited a news sensation that reached as far as they did around the globe. This is the story not only of their journey, but what happens after their day in the sun.

“Stratford itself is the type of walkable wholesome town Rodgers and Hammerstein might write a musical about.”
